1. Visible Cracks or Splits in the Material
Small hairline cracks can be normal over time, but wide or spreading cracks are a red flag. Whether your bulkhead is timber or vinyl, structural cracks compromise its ability to hold back water and soil pressure. If you notice cracks that are growing, running horizontally, or concentrated near the base, don’t ignore them — that’s your bulkhead telling you it’s under more stress than it can handle.
2. Bowing or Leaning: A Major Bulkhead Replacement Sign
A bulkhead that’s starting to lean toward the water or bow outward from the bottom, near ot below the waterline, is one of the most urgent signs of failure. This happens when the soil pressure behind the wall exceeds what the structure can resist — often due to age, water saturation, incorrect materials, or a compromised anchor system. A slight lean might be repairable, but significant bowing almost always means replacement is the safer and more cost-effective long-term solution.
3. Erosion Behind the Wall
Walk the area behind your bulkhead. Do you notice soil washing away, sinkholes forming, or the ground sinking near the wall? Depending on the age of your bulkhead, and what type of lumber was used during the installation process, you may start to see the timber components of your bulkhead start to deteriorate over time. Press a screwdriver into the base of your bulkhead — if it sinks in easily, the timber is compromised.
Certain metal components may also start to deteriorate depending on the type of metal, and age of the bulkhead.
Once rot or corrosion sets in, it spreads, and no amount of patching will restore the structural integrity of the wall.
5. Gaps Between Panels or Boards
Gaps in your bulkhead — even small ones — allow soil to escape and water to move freely behind the wall. Over time, these gaps widen as pressure increases and material shifts. If you can see daylight through your bulkhead or notice soil seeping through the joints, that’s a sign the wall is no longer doing its job.
6. Water Pooling in Unusual Places
If you’re seeing standing water in areas of your yard that didn’t used to hold water, or if water is appearing on the land side of your bulkhead after rain or high tide, it could mean your drainage system is compromised or the wall is no longer effectively retaining soil. Left unaddressed, this leads to further erosion and structural damage to the surrounding property.

Most bulkheads have a lifespan of 30–50 years depending on the material, installation quality, and maintenance history. If your bulkhead is approaching or past that range — even if it looks okay on the surface — it’s worth having a professional evaluate it.
