Your pool deck takes a beating. Sun, humidity, pool chemicals, and constant foot traffic all add up — and here in South Louisiana, the heat alone is enough to fade, crack, and wear down even a well-installed deck faster than you’d expect. If your pool deck is looking rough, the good news is you probably don’t need to tear it out and start over. In most cases, pool deck resurfacing is a smarter, more cost-effective solution.
Here’s what Baton Rouge pool owners need to know about their options.
Signs It’s Time to Resurface
Don’t wait until your deck becomes a safety hazard. If you’re noticing any of the following, it’s worth getting an assessment:
- Surface cracks or chipping that catch bare feet
- Fading, staining, or discoloration that won’t wash out
- A rough, uneven texture that’s become uncomfortable to walk on
- Pooling water in spots where the deck has shifted or settled
Minor surface wear doesn’t mean you need a full replacement. In most cases, resurfacing adds years of life to an existing deck at a fraction of the cost of tearing everything out.
Pool Deck Resurfacing Options
Concrete Paint or Sealer — The most affordable entry point. A good quality pool deck paint or epoxy sealer covers surface stains and minor imperfections and adds a layer of protection. Keep in mind this is a shorter-term fix — depending on foot traffic and sun exposure, it may need to be reapplied every few years. Best for decks that are structurally sound and just need a cosmetic refresh.
Spray Texture Overlay (Cool Deck / Knockdown Finish) — This is one of the most popular choices for Louisiana pool owners, and for good reason. This pool deck resurfacing option gives you a slip-resistant, comfortable surface that stays noticeably cooler underfoot than plain concrete — a big deal when your pool deck is baking in direct sun all afternoon. It can be tinted to a range of colors and gives the deck a clean, updated look. This is a great option for resurfacing older kool-deck style finishes that have seen better days.
Stamped Concrete Overlay — If you want something more visually striking, a stamped overlay lets you mimic the look of natural stone, brick, or tile without the cost of the real thing. A new layer of polymer-modified concrete is applied over your existing deck and stamped with texture mats before it sets. The result is a completely custom look that can dramatically transform the feel of your outdoor space. This option costs more than a basic reseal but is still significantly less than a full replacement.
Concrete Staining — A good option for decks that are structurally solid but have faded or uneven coloring. Acid staining or water-based dye penetrates the surface and adds rich, deep color with a natural variation that looks much more interesting than painted concrete. It works well on both plain and previously stamped surfaces.
What About a Full Replacement?
Sometimes resurfacing isn’t the right answer. If your deck has significant structural issues — large cracks, heaving slabs, or areas that have sunk or separated — no coating is going to fix the underlying problem. In those cases, the honest answer is that a proper repair or full replacement is the better long-term investment.
If you’re not sure which category your deck falls into, that’s exactly the kind of thing we can help you figure out before you spend money on the wrong solution.
